LSU will go with sophomore Michael Van Buren as its starting quarterback Saturday vs. Arkansas, per a report from On3per a report from On3, after Garrett Nussmeier re-aggravated a "nagging" injury during Thursday's practice.
Interim coach Frank Wilson told reporters Nussmeier tweaked his abdomen, but said "I think he's probable." He was later downgraded to questionable on the SEC availability report.
LSU (5-4, 2-4 SEC) hosts Arkansas at 12:45 p.m. on SEC Network.
"A little bit concerning. It's something that we need to monitor and continue to watch with him as we head into the game," Wilson said. "Today at practice, Garrett was the starter and has been all week. We'll continue to monitor his situation to see how he is. If we have to start Michael, if it got down to that, we feel good that he's fully capable of doing so."
The senior has battled an abdominal injury during preseason practice through the first few weeks of the season. He hasn't looked himself this season after passing for an SEC-leading 4,052 yards in 2024.
Nussmeier was benched during the Alabama game last week and Van Buren entered the game with less than seven minutes left in the third quarter. Van Buren was 5-of-11 passing for 52 yards and rushed for a yard.
Who is Garrett Nussmeier's backup?
A transfer from Mississippi State, Van Buren started eight games for the Bulldogs last season as a true freshman. Van Buren showed flashes of potential in 2024, passing for 1,886 yards with 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions, adding five rushing scores. He threw for three touchdowns in back-to-back games against Georgia and Texas A&M last season.
Earlier this week, Wilson shared LSU's plan on offense was to play both Nussmeier and Van Buren against the Razorbacks. Scratch that plan.
